I would like to add some detail to my Scale Santa Fe F3, has anyone super detailed their scale F3 or F7 locomotives? Added maintenance grab irons, lift rings, MU hoses, horns, etc? Who would be a good source for detailing parts? Is their any forum members who does super detailing? Show us some pics of your detailed F3's and or F7's.

Joe, Like HW said, P&D has a load, even cab interiors.

The one thing I have never liked about most older 3-rail F3s is the solid plastic "wire screens (are they intake or exhaust?)" on the sides of the unit.  I had those in some old HO Athearn F3s and cut them out then applied fine wire mesh to the openings.  I'm sure someone (P&D?) has wire mesh that can be inserted in the openings.  I have a RailKing F3 that is solid plastic, plus it's 2" too short of scale (8 scale feet).  It's in pieces, never to be assembled again.

Fans on top are another thing that can be replaced with individual components.

I'm waiting for Atlas to offer a single F3A unit lettered for Seaboard Air Line so I don't have to do anymore modifying, I've done enough on all my other engines to last a lifetime.

Then why did you post on this thread, AlanHN?  The OP was looking for help and you didn't have any to offer, so you basically implied that his desire to improve his loco is wrong?

Not cool.

The differences there will help spell what you may need to do.

I've super-detailed a lot of other units and am currently working on my MTH F7 ABA units. I've completed the enhancements outlined in John Sethian's guide in O Scale Trains magazine (minus the real glass windshields) and then going even further to match the correct horn, roof steam pipes, correct 48" lead roof fan, air hoses, fuel tank/skirting revisions, on top of other additions (multiple speakers, crossover circuit, ridding the anaconda tether) I'm still working.  It's taken a long time to get as far as I have.  I'm saving the super-detailing for last.  That's the easy part.

Thanks Dave, here are a few pics of the prototype and model. I don't want to get into as much details as you do on your models, but was thinking about adding some maintenance grab irons, nose lift rings, different horns, maybe some MU hoses and the nose door headlight. The model is the MTH F3's from a few years ago that were made with the simulated stainless side panels.
