Switch machine noise? I'm having trouble getting a Z1000 Ross switch machine to throw when I push the button. It sounds like it is making a whirring noise but does not change the position of the switch points. Maybe the gears are worn out. I think I will try putting a new machine in it's place and see if that works. Anyone else had this problem? I did adjust the tension on the spring attached to the throw bar so that should not be an issue.

Most likely the gear has become separated from the pivoting switch throw. If you open up the motor (3 very small screws under the motor) the fix is obvious and easy to do.
if there was a bind in the points the plastic gear can strip also. open it up like Barry says and connect it electrically you should be able to tell the problem. Most of the time the whirring noise indicates the death knell of the DZ1000
Thanks Barry, I will check it out. Meantime I have replaced the machine with another one but still have'nt got it hooked up electrically yet. Using solid wire but might have to tin the ends a little to give more thickness to the wire. Somehow one or more of the wires is not making contact.

Conclusion: New machine installed and is working now after tinning the feeder wires.
Old machine did have a loose gear. Will fix and save.
