Good morning all and welcome to another edition of Switcher Saturday!

In this recurring weekly thread we celebrate the smaller locomotives that do the big work of railroading.   From juice jacks and Dinky sized diesels, to steamers that stomped the yards and picked their way carefully down tight industrial alleyways, to modern road switchers and new technology machines, we love them all.  #SwSat is always open to all scales and gauges.

For this morning's kickoff images we have a couple of monochromatic machines, the classic lionel 41 Army gas turbine Switcher,  and WBB GP9 in Norfolk Southern black.

Central Railroad of New Jersey #107 is a model of a USRA 0-6-0 steam locomotive made by Atlas O (1702-1, MSRP $649) with TMCC in 2006. It is very well made, highly detailed, and has realistic steam sounds and whistle, but the stiff tether and engine-to-tender coupling are difficult to manage. Atlas lists this engine for O-36 curves but I run mine on O-54. Models of the USRA 0-6-0 also have been made by MTH and recently by Lionel.

This type of engine was one of twelve standardized steam locomotive designs developed by the United States Railroad Administration during World War 1. Alco built 10 locomotives of this type (#101 to #110) for the CNJ during 1918 and 1919. Engine weight was 165,000 pounds on 51-inch driving wheels and tender weight was 144,000 pounds. Tractive effort was 39,100 pounds at 190 pounds-per-square-inch boiler pressure.

Videos show the model on my 10’-by-5’ layout running at a scale speed of 32 miles-per-hour pulling CNJ boxcars #22485 and #25624 by Weaver, PRR boxcar #19247 by MTH, and CNJ caboose #91530 by MTH.

It's 1957 and passenger service on the Put is approaching the end of the line. It's getting run down, and rats have been spotted carrying slices of pizza along the right of way:

LOL.

Behold, the rats are startled by a NY Central RS3 road switcher (MTH Proto 3) hauling Madison Heavyweights (MTH Railking) passed the House that Ruth Built:

I say: long live the Put, at least in our memories and imaginations. Arnold

Love the pizza rats, @Arnold D. Cribari. Fortunately, I didn’t see any on the NYC leg of my trip. I’m still on vacation, but thought I’d post this old video from my phone  of my US Army   GP20 pulling out of the yard. Have a great Memorial Day weekend and God Bless all in our military that made the ultimate sacrifice -

Hello, SwSat nation!  Let’s remember our veterans on this Memorial Day weekend and thank them for their service.

Last Saturday your Yardmaster had a senior moment or his collection is getting too big (is that possible!) to manage.  He incorrectly identified his Williams Rutland GE 70 tonner no. 500 as his newest switcher, but he should have selected his bargain from the Springfield show, MTH B&M SW9 no. 1230.

To correct that error, he has pulled some photos from the archive and shot a new video of no. 1230 pulling the work train handed off from the Rutland.

Well in honor of our fighting forces, keeping peace, assuring liberty, and defending the nation this Memorial Day we keep them in our prayers to ask for their safety and success.  On the humble Leonardtown and Savannah, we asked our local military bases to  provide some locomotives and rolling stock to form up a parade of honor.  Here are some pictures.

Best wishes to all.  May you and your family enjoy a safe and happy Memorial Day.  Possible in part because of the work, courage, and service of our armed forces members standing vigil across the world.
