It's #SwitcherSaturday time!!!!

Lots of us out there love switchers (shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters, etc.), so lets keep #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling!

If you missed last week's SWSAT you should really go take a look, it was a ton of fun!

This week at the Murnane house...
Well, this week I slept late (one of the kids had us up half the night, long story), so I'll post some pictures later this morning.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend, and if you get a chance - post some switcher stuff here!

All the best...Rich Murnane

p.s. Miss the post on Saturday? NO BIG DEAL, just keep posting pictures of your favorites until the next #SwitcherSaturday

Thanks Rich...I figured you either had a family chore or were sleeping. I was just about to post the topic for you!

This week I found a nice Pennsy B6sa complete with a cabin car, catenary and a crew willing to pose! Juniata built the locomotive in 1913 and it was retired in April 1950.

Happy SWSat everyone.

On the Saturday before York Week (not going ), the RSJ&B work train is on the main getting ready to install some new grade crossing signals. The signal crew is prepping the site and working on the underground wiring. Hopefully the project will be complete in a week or so.

B&O Chessie 2314 was on the job this week.

Happy SWSAT...great stuff posted so far as always!  Below are a few shots of one of only two steam engines on my "roster".  CNJ 0-6-0 switcher #107 is a Weaver brass model that is very near and dear to my heart.

My paternal grandfather was a fireman/engineer on the Jersey Central (CNJ).  Unfortunately, he died at 58 (when I was 2 years old) and I had no memories of him.  My family had no known "railroading" photos of him....so all I had to go by were the stories that my Dad told me about his Dad's days on the railroad.  The rest was left up to my imagination.  I grew up being fascinated my trains and railroading.

Now, to fast forward a bit...

I had spent over 30 years searching for--and hoping to find--just one photo of my grandfather working on the railroad.  Then out of the blue, about 6-7 years ago, I got a call from my Mom.  While cleaning up and purging some "junk" that accumulated over time, she stumbled upon a few old photos of my grandfather "working on the railroad".  It felt like winning the lottery to me!

One of the photos discovered (see below...I've posted this before here on the Forum) is of my grandfather in the cab of the "real" CNJ #107 taken near the large coaling tower in the CNJ's Ashley, PA yard.

I already owned this Weaver engine when my family gave me the new-found photos of my grandfather; however, it was not numbered "107" like the one in the photo.  I really wanted my engine to be "107", and since this was prior to me getting involved with weathering and detailing work, I decided to send it back to Weaver to have them change the road numbers and weather it for me.

Ever since then, it's been displayed on a shelf in my home office next to a replica of the Ashley coaling tower that was scratch-built by Forum member Alex M.

I was looking up at "107" the other day and figured it was time to take her down and shoot a few photos to share here.  I plan to add Kadee scale couplers, a few more details, and probably my own "touches" to the weathering when I find the time.

Thanks for reading this...and if you made it this far, I hope you enjoyed my story!

Joe, I enjoyed your story. Glad you finally got some photos of your grandfather. He looks just like your dad. I'd like to see some pics of the coaling tower.

Don

My K-Line Long Island Railroad B6sb 0-6-0 steam switcher, road number 2015 (item K3439-0001), is a very finely detailed scale model announced in 2001 at an MSRP of $599.95. I think K-Line was making some beautiful products in those days. The engine is shown here with a Weaver brass model of Pennsylvania Railroad wood caboose 981133.

The PRR’s Juniata shops built 238 B6sb steam engines between 1916 and 1920. They weighed 180,300 pounds, operated on superheated steam at a pressure of 205 pounds per square inch, and produced 36,140 pounds of tractive force on 56-inch drivers.

The LIRR was owned by the PRR between 1900 and 1968. During that time various types of PRR steam power ran on the LIRR including the B6s switcher, K4s Pacific, H10s Consolidation, and notably the G5s 4-6-0 “Pittsburgh commuter engine.” B6sb 2015 was the only example of its class to have run on Long Island. The one photo of it that I have shows its tender labeled as “PENNSYLVANIA” rather than “LONG ISLAND” as on the K-Line model.

Yay SWSat is on!

Great going this week guys! Nice posts. I had an earlier than usual kids soccer game this morning on Randells Island under the arches of Hellgate Bridge. While I was out there 4 Amtrak Northeast Direct regional trains went by and one Acela. There was one P&W mixed train with garbage cars at the back end went by as well.  The fields are so under the track it is nearly impossible to get good pictures.

This week I'm posting some early NYC Alco, FM and  EMD diesel  switchers.

Joe - thanks for posting the photos of your grandfather with his locomotive on the CNJ!!  Great back story too!!   I recently learned that my great grandfather was a employed by the B&O, however, its uncertain if he was an engineer or tower operator.  To date I've not been able to discover any photos.  It's wonderful you have this one ... it's terrific!!!

Joe, Great story and thanks for sharing it. After returning from WWII, my father was briefly a fireman on the New Haven, working out of Oak Point in the Bronx. Unfortunately (for me only!), he did not like the work and moved on to better things (for him and before I was born and could argue against such a decision!). I never found a picture of him during his railroading period, so I can relate to your story.

I think the 56 they have is the BAR #56 because they also have the BAR #52 and your BAR #57 is at the Cole Transportation Museum in Maine repainted as its original #557.

Here is #56 in SNC paint. It is a little different and simplified than the #52 paint.

Great stuff this week all, sorry I was MIA all day, between being up all night, taking a nap, and driving kids around to events, I didn't get any time at all to get a few new pictures in.

CNJ #1601 - your story and pictures are awesome, thank you for sharing.  I think I've told you all a million times that my Grandmother's father died in a train accident up by the Hoosac Tunnel in Mass back in 1901 and I've only been able to find two pictures of the locomotive, here is one which has some folks who I imagine might be some of my relatives, but don't know.

IMG_4115

Have a great week guys.

Silver Lake: I like that Boston & Albany Alco HH660. I have that in H0-scale but hope see that also O-scale some day.

I would absolutely love an Alco HH660 in Orange and Green New Haven colors please if you are taking orders.

BAR GP7 #63. BL2s are some of my favorites as well. One of my favorite rail fanning moments was seeing the two operable ones side by side at the Saratoga and North Creek RR a few years ago. The weathering on your BAR#57 is wonderful.

Silver Lake: Thanks. That Saratoga and North Greek RR BL2 #52 (ex BAR #56) is a really beauty. Looks at they run also some freight trains there.

I think the 56 they have is the BAR #56 because they also have the BAR #52 and your BAR #57 is at the Cole Transportation Museum in Maine repainted as its original #557.

Here is #56 in SNC paint. It is a little different and simplified than the #52 paint.

I really like the look of the Bl-2. I have the william's GM Demo one. Their look was way ahead of their time.
