Good Morning OGR

I bought a new Lionel Reading T1 #2100 and it came with a scale coupler that I would like to install. It looks like it might be a simple case of unscrewing the small coupler that came attached and screwing in the scale coupler. Before I try this, does this sound right?

Thanks

No. The photo is very close up, so it makes everything look bigger than what it really is. If you were to see the difference between the two couplers, you would instantly see that the coupler that came installed is small and just for show. The scale coupler that came as an extra part with the T1 is correct if you want to attached another locomotive or car in front.

My Reading T1 came with a lobster claw replacement coupler for double heading, the "for show" scale coupler that's on it isn't an operating coupler.  You just remove the screw and replace the coupler with the functional coupler for double-heading.

That's what I thought, but wanted to be sure.

Where can one buy more of these functional couplers? I have a Reading Camelback with the same situation, but it did not come with a functional coupler to replace the nonfunctional.

I'd start at Lionel parts, but knowing the product number of the locomotive is a good start.  When you ask a question about a specific part for a locomotive, having to guess what model you have makes it pretty difficult.

The nonfunctional couplers look identical on the T1 and the Camelback, in terms of shape and size. They both have identical screws to remove the nonfunctional couplers. My "guess" is that they could both use the same part. I'll check with Lionel. Thank you.

Just replaced the coupler. You were right, it was an elementary-level chore. Now I need to find another one that I can use with the Camelback.

Correct. That is indeed a "scale coupler".

No,,,,,,,,,,,,what came with the model is a large dummy "lobster claw" coupler, which is no where near "scale", but will couple up to other functional lobster claw couplers.
