I already converted a few MTH auto carriers to 2 rail. Lately I have had a few trains come apart as my layout has some hills and valleys. So I look at each car every time there is an incident. I noticed one of the MTH auto cars I converted has low hung couplers. I pulled it off the track to fix and I also noticed one of the trucks is at the last thread of it's mounting screw. I should have put something on the threads to keep them snug, yet loose enough to allow them to handle my track work.

Anyways with my memory lapse, I can't get the roof off? It seems like the roof is stuck in the middle of the car. I removed the four screws that go up from the bottom. I figure that the car may need some type of squeezing to release the roof in the middle? Before I break something, I did a search here with no luck.

What holds the roof on in the middle??? ( I don't see extra screws)

Joe,

Since the Lionel car came out I haven’t converted any MTH cars, but I’m pretty sure there are eight screws holding the roof. I think you have to remove the frame and weight on the bottom to access the middle set of screws. Other than the short length I always thought these were nice once converted, especially if lowered.

Thanks Rich! there were 4 more screws that I missed. I made the bottom different on this car so that it's trapped unless the trucks are removed. It goes to one side just enough to allow removal of those extra screws.

I converted one Lionel car to 2 rail. I even bought extra Atlas trucks to do more of the ones I bought. They are sitting under the layout waiting for me to get to those. I never settled on whether I needed more of the extra long shank couplers for those or not. I never ordered more couplers!
