I have a Lionmaster BigBoy upgraded years ago with TAS EOB.  The engine sat on a display track for several years. When I put it on the layout and powered it up; the engine “booted up” properly.  However, when I apply power to move the loco in either direction, it takes off at full speed and the whistle blows constantly.  No response to the throttle wheel.  The only way to stop it and the whistle is to hit the direction button, momentarily interrupting power.

I tried resetting the board by going back through the TAS maual set up procedures to no effect.

Any ideas / recommendations before I open up the engine?

TIA,

I think you'll have to open it up.  The symptoms indicate a problem with the flywheel encoder, could be as simple as a loose plug or maybe the tape on the flywheel has gotten dry and the encoder strip has slipped.  Could be a broken wire to the encoder as well.

Another possibility is the fact that it takes off may indicate it's in conventional mode, which would indicate it's not seeing the TMCC signal.  This could be an antenna connection issue or loose boards.

First step would be to check all the board and connector seating internally.

Had the same issues with a KLine GG1.  Shipped to Brasseur.  Took them weeks to get it working. I believe they removed EOB and put in complete new driver board.  Never worked reliably after I got it back. They kept giving me different start up proceedures which would sometimes work, sometimes not.  Finally found a tech in PA. who tested the engine, replaced the receiver board, and the engine has worked reliably ever since.
