Why not just go with the scale couplers? I know that Kadee couplers will couple nicely with the 3-Rail lobster claws, if you are so inclined.
Hot Water,
Which Kadee should I use....
sorry--pretty new on this.
As a 3RS modler, I have been using Kadee #805 couplers years. However, Kadee has new and improved versions, which just came out within the last 30 to 60 days. The coupler head is much more scale looking, and that external spring for there knuckle is now hidden inside. Go to the Kadee web site and look at the new 700 series couplers. I purchased a package of #745 couplers at the March Meet, a few weeks ago. They are the metal coupler with a plastic box.
You're going to have to modify the existing coupler box that is already on these cars to mount KaDee couplers of any type. You'll either have to modify that box to accept a somewhat modified Kadee and improvise a couple bnox cover as well. Or, you can mill that exiosting box flat to mount a KaDee box in its place.
KWR is a name that I have not seen for quite some time.
I have some weaver archbar trucks and couplers---I think I will use them instead!
A car like that would not have Archbar trucks. It would have bettendorf style or maybe andrews. So if you buying new trucks, you might as well buy some that are more prototypical.
I agree also with above that athe underframe looks like a Thomas car. I have 2-3 of the single dome cars.
At least two of mine use 2-56 screws to mount the trucks. These work very well with Athearn trucks. It also helps to get some Walthers 2-56 washers to keep the truck centered on the screw. These fit precisely into the Athearn truck bolster.
This all supposes you are doing 2-rail or 3RS and using a scale model type truck. It also assumes Kadee couplers
I have no experience with trying to use the big MTH or Lionel couplers and trucks. I do know they both use unique (to their stuff) truck mounting systems.
Whichever way you go, it will take a little fiddling and model work. But it should be worth. Mine painted up really nicely. Just be patient and think before you cut or drill.
