Has anyone done this? Take an old non-whistling tender and cut out the fake coal load. Then make a receiving bin in the space so you can actually load coal into it from a 97 or 397. I think this would look very realistic!

Nice idea, It would look great loading the coal....but you would need a small fireman to shovel it out???? It looks like it would be pretty easy to do.

Only on older and/or smaller steamers, which generally did not have stokers and were hand-fired.
Now, emulating an oil-burner and filling the tender oil bunker, through a little hole, may get a little more messy....
EEEK! (for the oil tender filling!) :-(
We have loaders that fill hoppers; So why are there not loaders that fill tenders?
Because unlike hoppers, where some have unloading undercarriage opening to unload the coal; tenders are supposed to be USING UP the coal.
Maybe a small hole can drilled underneath to let the coal gradually diminish! Not good for the track though!
Maybe an operating hatch on bottom and dump into ash pit or something similar on every pass. A little at a time K-liner
Don't cut out the fake coal load. Get some "real coal" of your choice and apply it to the fake coal load with white glue. Do it it in small sections. You'll have bare areas you'll have to touch up. The glue dries clear, so you won't see it. I have done this with 5-6 engines with good results. Looks good to me!

Yes! If you watch Great Toy Train Layouts video #3, Phill Klopp has done just that!

That's my #1 favorite train video of all time. It's called Pennsylvania Suite and it has Phil Klopp's layout and the late Bruce Manson's layout.
