Testing New ZW-L Upon Receipt

I thinking about replacing a PW KW with a new ZW-L - not that I really need a ZW-L's worth of power but let's just say I'm lusting after it. LOL

I can't find the thread at the moment where somebody said they'd had to send one or two back with problems. Since I don't have a full time layout right now and only set up Christmas layouts (I know I know, don't need a ZW-L for that) I want to be sure the ZW-L doesn't have any issues when I get it.

Is there a set of things I should test? (Details on testing appreciated)

Are issues with ZW-Ls normally present right out of the box or do some develop over time?

Seems like I recall some isolated issue, but I have not seen any evidence of problems with the ZW-L. I don't need but want one as well. It's just the $735 that's holding me back .

Have one and never had an issue. I believe unless something changed because of its weight, Lionel pays for shipping when needing service.

We purchased two ZW-L's for the layout. After about 10 hours of use one channel (throttle) failed on one of them. We got an RA. The total time from getting the RA to having it back repaired and operable was 6 days. That is great service. The layout is Legacy and LCS, buying the ZW-L's was the right decision for me, I am totally satisfied with them.

About a year ago I was like you, wanting a zw-l and I put it off until Nassau hobby shop had a 20% off sale in May. They also included free shipping. My cost was $594. I love it!
