Sounds like she really was getting a new paint job, and probably some maintenance.
I was present at the shop every Saturday during my summer vacation, and a few weekends before summer started, and a ton of things happened. We stripped it down to the bare boiler to do an exterior test. We took all of the rust off and started putting it back together. That is easier said then done because we had taken all of the appliances off of the sides, including the insulation, and we had taken every valve out of the cab as well. Once the insulation had been put back (Which was a real pain in the rear), we set about tackling the jacketing. We got brand new sheet metal, so the jacketing is all brand new. I was sent into the frame under the boiler several times to tighten the jacketing bands because I was the smallest. It was a good summer, and I learned a lot about the locomotive, and it is pretty cool to see it come together after being stripped completely. But the new jacketing is the reason why the engine was repainted.
And when there was downtime at the shop, I did some painting myself.
