Here is some delightful footage of B&O, CNJ and Reading operations in and around Jersey City Terminal which is now a part of Liberty State Park. Highlights include cab units in the original scheme of tangerine and blue, a diesel powered Crusader and a turntable used to turn B&O buses providing connecting service to Manhattan. It's all quite glorious.

Enjoy,

Bob

Thanks for posting!

Opening scenes of the 20th Century Fox movie From the Terrace, starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Myrna Loy, were filmed in Jersey City Terminal on December 2, 1959. Reading T-1 2124, fresh from the first three Iron Horse Rambles, pulls in with a string of 2000-series semistreamlined ("blimp") coaches. Seats have blue upholstery, so these cars were used on the WALL STREET between Jersey City Terminal and Reading Terminal, Philly, or on the KING COAL between Reading Terminal and Shamokin.

A caption identifies the location as PHILADELPHIA 1947. But 2124 was too big for Reading Terminal. Sharp eyes can catch names of author John O'Hara's fictional places on a destination board (Gibbsville, for example).

That's nice footage.

Here in New Jersey, the state government blew an opportunity to provide seed funds for a transportation museum in Phillipsburg. The CNJ terminal on the Jersey City waterfront is a perfect location to house that museum. The platforms and canopies are in restorable conditions and the terminal itself is in beautiful condition.

Historically, 90% the NJ side of the North (Hudson) River waterfront from Jersey City to Fort Lee contained railroad property. Of course now the state is in deep debt so there's no funding on any horizon.

Thanks for posting that, it sure brings back very fond memories of the CNJ. During my "early years", early 1940s thru mid 1950s, I was raised in Cranford, NJ, and once old enough, was able to ride the Jersey Central into Jersey City Terminal, and railfan there. I even have some 2 1/4" square B&W negatives, plus some rare color negative photos of the good old Jersey Central. I remember seeing LOTS of steam, and even the famous Reading Crusader, with that streamlined Pacific hauling that double observation, stainless passenger train.

Thanks again.

Yes Ralph, It's currently owned by Luzerne County, which has no funding to do anything with it. The county is trying to find a developer, but so far no interest. The Wyoming Valley historical Society has expressed interest, but they are only interested if it is donated. The county paid just over 5 million for the property which also includes a small strip mall and the land formerly used as a motel which used box cars as rooms, and a diner car as a diner. The property is assessed at 1.2 million, so no matter what they do, it will be a loss to taxpayers.

It's a shame that all of it is going by the way side, as is, here in Long Island, N.Y.

My Wife's Maternal Grandparents, then her Mother, have a house in Nanticoke.

My wife's Maternal Grandfather was a Coal Miner and worked for the Susquehanna Coal Co., before the mines closed.

And most of the folks in Nanticoke liked and drank Stegmaier beer, more than Gibbons' beer!

Very interesting.  They probably could not fit any of today's buses on it if they wanted to use it for its original purpose.

Excellent vid!  Has some stock footage from CNJ's "The BIG Little Railroad", but all of it good.
