I don't know the exact year of this photo, just sometime in the 1950's. Every year my dad would
set up the "Christmas Garden" in our living room with the centerpiece being the tree. He and I
would start the day after Thanksgiving and it would remain until after the new year. At some
point, he recognized how obsessed I was with trains and turned over the responsibility to me.
Just like any self-respecting "train nut" I promptly moved the whole thing into the basement so
that I could have my trains all year round. This photo shows the layout in the basement. We still set up a tree in the livingroom but the trains were no longer seasonal. Just a simple oval of 027 track, one switch & siding. The set that's running is the Lionel 2035 from 1950. I still have it and it still runs. Buildings and such are mostly Plasticville. One humorous note, to the right you can see where I attempted to paint some mountains - right on the wall! Mom was not thrilled and my artwork ended there.

Nice memories, Ralph. We also had a setup that my dad put up after Thanksgiving, and into the new year. I also had a 2035, and a streamlined 221. I sometimes look to purchase either for sentimental reasons, but they have to be in excellent condition. I once ran my 2035 off the layout, and onto the floor, busting off a marker light!

I just noticed a mistake I made in my prior post. Sorry but I only recently discovered the old photo and hadn't looked it closely. The Lionel 2035 was my "main squeeze" and I ran the wheels off it. However, I now realize that the locomotive on the track in the photo was a Lionel Northern Pacific 44 tonner. I still have that one too. 🙂
