Hey Gang!

Finally had some time to finish up the mine tipple I started last spring. Its a modern (for the 60's anyway) building. Here are some details on construction and parts:

1. Primary construction is black foam board from the local craft store.

2. Sheet metal is from Clever products and printed on Kodak matt photo paper then cut out and glued on with Elmer's glue stick. Great time and money saver and looks great in my view.

3. Windows are from Tichy (double hung)

4. Doors, railings and stairs are from Plastruct

5. Lights are from Miniatronics 12V

6. Coal loaders are scratch built.

7. Conveyors are 1x1 wood spindles covered in sheet metal. Lattice supports are Conrad 883 crane boom sections.

8. Smaller auxiliary coal loader is a 1/50 scale diecast road scraper I kitbashed by building a base around it and coal bin. Got the idea from a photo in one of the Morning Sun Books coal series books.

9. Track and switches are Atlas O. The tipple can service 9 cars, with an additional 3 cars added to track 1 for the auxiliary loader. The complex has a 20 car capacity with the storage track factored in (near the security booth and going out of sight).

Thats about all I can think of. Happy to answer any questions. Still some more clean-up items to do but its mostly there......enjoy...movies coming next...

Hey gang!

Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the pics. Really a blessing to know your work is enjoyed and is inspirational.

Naveen- good eye and I ordered this bizarre flat looking mine loader from Norscot but it has yet to arrive. So this modern loader is filling in for the time being. I agree equipment really sets the period....

Rex- The glue sticks are good as regular glue as long as you place the pieces before it cures. I had to change some of the panels (which by the way are not single pieces of corrugated  metal but are printed in 8.5x11 sheets and cut out by you to desired size) and it tore the back of the paper off as I tried to peel it back. So it works well but you must place the piece quickly.

Dennis- This took me a little over 40hrs.... 1hr at a time I think. Was just not motivated to work on the layout this year.  Re-energized now though and am back at it. The things that made this an easier project was using readily available materials. So foam board, and printing off the textures from Clever saved a huge amount of time. Minimal paint and weathering needed. The wall is made from scrap wood I had in my garage painted and weathered. The auxiliary loader was already built and I mounted it on a foam board base and built a simple storage bin. The storage silo is a load from DHS diecast for larger cranes. None of this was difficult....well the lights were a pain but they double the visuals as night operations are a lot of fun.

I still have to weather the window glass and blank out some panes but that will come once the snow flies.

Hey Mark- it really wasn't that bad....took about 40 hrs total. The building itself I made while watching an NFL football game (all that's needed is a razor blade and a glue gun when working with foam board). The most time consuming part was the lights and wiring. Each light has to be lengthened by soldering extension wires to each strand. Its tedious but worth the effort.
