Matching models of diesel units to real life diesel locomotives is one thing, but it is obviously impossible to take ones NYC Hudson, for example, down to the NYC and compare it to a real J3a. Thus, extensive use of prototype photos of the specific class of steam locomotive one is weathering, are absolutely a necessity.
