It's probably a little late to be posting this.

Almost two years ago, I visited the Meadowcroft Historical site in Avella, Pa. As of two years ago, they had a heavyweight passenger car (shown) and caboose on the property. When I visited, I was informed that the passenger car was going to be moved to a museum in California, I believe. They were not disclosing the name of the museum. If it was going to move by rail, it would have had to move via the WLE in downtown Avella, after first trucking it down the mountain from where the site is.

Does anyone in California know if a museum there took recent delivery of a heavyweight passenger car? Did anyone living in the Avella area or railfanning the WLE catch pictures of the move? Or did it go by truck?

Well, you piqued my interest. I just finished speaking with the Meadowcroft site.

Some information:

The car was a private coach that was in excellent condition. The interior had all of the original appointments, sheets, silverware, dishes, etc. 4 cabins, kitchen, bath servant quarters.

The person said  it was associated with Union Pacific RR originally.

The car is now in Sacramento with a State Museum.

They didn't have any further specifics.

I forgot to ask how it was transported.

I imagine it was either moved by lowboy flatbed truck the whole way to California, or via the lowboy to the Wheeling and Lake Erie line at Avella and thus onto the national network. I would have liked to see it done, though, because some of the curves on the road up to Meadowcroft are almost hairpins.

Any news?

Sorry to say, nothing. I called the general number and the person that answered gave me the email of a curator.

Needless to say, I am disappointed.

Perhaps you would have better luck.
