I took a chance and pre-ordered Lionel's new single door PRR X31 round roof box car. I was hoping they would be up to the standard found in Lionel’s very nice PS1 box cars.  The X31 was delivered  this week and unfortunately the model fails to capture the look of the prototype from several perspectives.  Lionel painted the car in a chocolate brown color similar to that found on circa 1946  non-scale Lionel PRR box cars.  The car should be painted in what PRR termed “freight car color" (as opposed to the darker Tuscan red used on PRR Passenger cars).   A good approximation of PRR Freight car color is Scalecoat Oxide red – slightly darker if freshly painted, lighter if faded (Weaver’s H30 paint looks good to my eye for a freshly painted car.  You may also note that Lionel’s lettering is slightly under prototype size.

The body tooling did not rise to the standard of Lionel's PS1 box car.. The roof walk end supports are poorly done and the lap seams on the sides and roof are noticeably "heavy" when compared to the subtle look of the prototype. Rivet size and pattern look right, and the door hardware is nicely done - though the door guide is slightly heavy. Ladders and grabs are also slightly heavy but acceptable. Less noticeable is that Lionel recycled their “standard” 40' freight car under frame (from the PS1) rather than creating new tooling to model the PRR design used under X31 series cars. To illustrate the issues I’ve included  photos of the Lionel X31 and a NJCB X31double door I painted about 25 years ago.  Interestingly the Lionel car has nicer door hardware than the brass model.

In the recent past O scale modelers have been pleased to find scale detailed mass produced plastic freight cars from Weaver, AtlasO, MTH, and Lionel, that with minor enhancement  provide a low cost "layout quality" alternatives to more expensive brass models. Unfortunately the new Lionel PRR X31 is a slight step backward from the march toward prototype fidelity.  In the future I will not pre-order new Lionel "Standard O" freight cars until I see them first.  I think I’ll repaint the Lionel X31 the next time I have several  other Pennsy freight cars ready for the paint booth.  Perhaps with prototypical paint, CDS lettering, new roof walk supports, Kadee couplers, Intermouintain trucks, and a little weathering  the body flaws won’t bug me as much - if not it will go on eBay some day.  Next up I believe is Weaver's rib side MILW box car.  I hope they are as nice as the Weaver B&O round roof box car.

That proverbially pulls 30-inches of vacuum!  But I guess we should have spoke up since the catalog renditions appeared to be too brown.  I have all four coming in, will keep since nothing better around.  I for one will know better from now on!

After Weaver did the B&O "wagontop" was hoping they would tool for Pennsy "round-roofs."

Yes that is cinder ballast on the the siding at Gray tower.  The Tyrone and Clearbranch branch is largely ballasted and I'll be starting ballast on the main soon.  A friend (Williamsburg Pete) visited a couple of weeks a go and posted some nice shots of the railroad on the three rail forum under title "Visit to a LARGE layout".

No surprise here

WEAVER and Atlas started out as 2 rail scale companies.

While LIONEL was a  3-rail toy train company and MTH was initially competing with Lionel.

A few more thoughts:

1)  As PRRronbh said "I guess we should have spoke up since the catalog renditions appeared to be too brown."  I agree we should have gotten our collective act together as soon as we saw that catalogue picture..it was out over 18  months ago.   I am sure a mini barrage of e-mails to Lionel would have gotten them to change the color. It's not that they don't have the paint, nor would it have cost them anything in either sales or production costs.

2)  As I said earlier, Lionel is known for reissuing cars in multiple paint schemes.  They now have the tooling, so don't be surprised if they came out with this car in Sante Fe, Polar Express, Elvis, and  NASCAR versions.   A series of e-mails from us would probably convince them to run ones in PRR Freight Car red.  Just imagine the ad:  "PRR X-31 Box Cars, now available in Pennsylvania Freight Car Red!"  For Lionel it will all come down to a matter of sales.

Thanks CWEX Chris for the encouragement

a similar situation occured when Weaver announced the H30 hopper. I noticed they had a tuscan red painted version, but no PRR freight car color version. I sent an email to Weaver explaining there is no tuscan prototype. they revised their listings to show a freight car color scheme instead. in the end I'm sure it saved a lot of aggravation.

Sadly these errors should not be happening today when there is so much easily attainable accurate reference material to be found.

Lionel says here they had painted cars at the York meet, those painted the wrong colors like the production cars too? Was going to pickup pre-ordered cars tomorrow, had hoped they would be unique cars in trains, now likely will tell them to send them back. Could live with a few iffy details but incorrect/bad color is obvious even to our guests...

Another failed attempt, Seaboard's Round-Roof Boxcars were not the same as PRRs X31 cars.  Side panels, roof design, end design, close but all different:

Hi Guys,

The car is rather presentable as an operational layout car. However the paint is a killer. Chocolate brown just ain't gonna get it. PRR freight car color did vary in shade over the years, but never this brown. And as mentioned, there are no longer any decals available out there to letter a repainted car. What a shame! There are certainly enough resources to be able to get it right the first time.

Just so everyone knows. PRR did NOT paint any freight cars or cabin cars "Tuscan" red.

Tuscan was a passenger color only.

Hey everybody

I hate to inform you that Weaver and Atlas put non-prototypical paint schemes on freight cars all the time.  Or at least they put prototypical paint schemes on the wrong model.

Several of the Paint schemes advertised for the Weaver Milwaukee Road rib side box cars are incorrect for the car that Weaver is making.  That isn't a secret.  Weaver is happy to make close enough cars and has for years.

I'm not sure which Great Northern box car is my favorite Atlas model, the 40 footer that's only prototypical dimension in the length or the 50 foot PS-1 that is accurately decorated right down to the ACF logo.

The Lionel X31A is a nicely tooled model although I agree with Ed that the roof panel lap joints are exaggerated.  Perhaps they can be toned down without too much expense.  The ends, running boards and added on details are nicely done.  I am sure that future runs will have more accurate paint colors.

Chris,

The only Lionel cars I've removed paint from were a few years old.  I've used brake fluid and Easy-Off Oven Cleaner (the smelly kind) on plastic without any noticeable bad effects (not sure what long-term effects there might be waiting for me).

Both items still took some long-time soaking and elbow grease with a toothbrush to remove all the paint.  I lined an old plastic flower box (Lowes) with a plastic bag, placed the car inside, then sprayed it down good with Easy-Off.  3-4 hours later I started brushing and repeated the procedure until I was satisfied.

Might as well put a disclaimer in...Use at your own risk

As nice as the casting looks in Ed's photos I would be willing to risk at least 1 to see how it came out.

Speaking of the Jerry Glow decals...I mailed him a check on Nov 11 for some Seaboard decals for my latest project and just got an email from him saying he mailed them this past weekend, should get them Wed or Thurs this week.  You can see them on his website (new, SAL double-door boxcar).  He does mostly HO and N, but he'll do O as well.  We communicated a few times until we both agreed on the size and type of FONT needed for the decals.  I think there's enough for 2 cars on the sheet I'm getting ($31 delivered).

>>>I too bought some of these- in PRR and Seaboard- sight unseen and was really very disappointed<<<

Walked into the LHS this week and bought this guy sight unseen.

Shiny paint, correct shade of brown??  Who cares..I'm not a nitpicker. Don't even know if a car like this existed..All I know is I like it.

>>>Looking at your track, that it obvious! Remember, this is the 2-Rail Forum!?!<<

LOL, you're right. Don't know how I stumbled on to this board...

New something was a amiss when it seemed like the Santa Christmas topics disappeared..

Anyway, I kinda like it here...For you..I'll try to keep the layout shots to a minimum....

Hot water, who's cares! Both are from the same company and have the same body, just the trucks and wheels are a little different in 2 and 3 rails...**** I run 2 rail box cars on my 3 rail layout because the cars are true to scale size for my 3rd rail PRR S1 unskirted duplex..

New NP DD.

After fixing it up with a lighter shade, I'm starting to like it!

The door guide details are really nice!

Had to remove the Lionel concave fish eyes and add flat homemade plastic ones.

I cut out and filed the side door windows too.

Next version #2 will have port holes on all the doors.

LIRR had 3 variations of windows and doors.

A project I always wanted to do. Tired of waiting for MTH & Lionel to get a clue.

PRR freight equipment was never Tuscan red.    It went through various versions of "boxcar" red.    The historians says the paint got darker over the years as artificial pigments replaced natural ones, but was still something in the freight car red catagory.   A friend and I have found (he found it) we like Floquil Polly Scale "Special Oxide Red" for PRR freight equipmnet.   Scalecoat makes a "PRR Freight car Color" that I have used.   It is a couple shades different than the Polly Scale but I think it is also a good color.

These cars were built before WWII and would/could have the circle keystone paint scheme.   Around 1954 they began to be repainted with the more modern shadow keystone (white with blackshadow, no circle).

The double door cars for some reason ahd the heralds on opposite ends than the single door cars.

Middle Division did produce a set of the shadow keystone decals. I have a set.

If anyone would have a set it would be either Al Small or Mike Caum of Northern Central Supply.

In fact, here is one now: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MIDDLE-DIVISION-RR-DECAL-SET-/161010762526?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item257cfd431e#ht_141wt_917 but it does not appear to have car data included.

there are actually 2 types of Middle Division decal sets. The earlier set is what is pictured in the auction, the later set came in a clear plastic sleeve with sheets about 4"x6", and contained everything needed: Herald, name, reporting marks, car data.

the later set is what you should look out for.

'hard? it's supposed to be hard. if it was easy everyone would do it. that's what makes it great'.
