Hey David, I am a little late to this show but Pennsy did do repaints in mid-60’s to the most simple and austere scheme.  There was a large white PRR on one end with a simple white outline keystone with entwined P R R in it on other end.

In the “Guide” volume 2 on page 40 there is a single door round top in that scheme picture dated November 1969.  In “Guide” volume 1 on page 79 (across from the DD round top picture you have) there is a X37B in this scheme picture from September 1973.

Has there been a model of the X32A, 50', Double-Door, Round-Roof boxcar made yet?

I'm asking because that may be the only way a Seaboard 40' "Turtleback" boxcar will ever see the light of day.  Looking at the drawings on prrfan's website, the 50 footer looks like it could be modified to make a 40 footer with correct number of side panels.

Bob,
Yes, Custom Brass did the X32 in brass a long time ago. There was the double door version and a single door version. I'm not sure if the end door version was done or not.

The Seaboard round roofs car are often thought of as a 32 AAR car with a round roof. By that I mean the have the tabbed side sill and single row of rivets on the side panels. All of the PRR family of X31 and X32 cars are an earlier type of freight car design and have a double row of rivets on the side sheets and an inward facing channel on the bottom of the car side.

You would do better to use the sides off a Weaver Steel boxcar, not the PS-1 the one from Crown Models. It's close to a 32 AAR boxcar. Then use the Lionel roof off the X31. You could widen the roof with a spacer in the middle of the roof (where it would be hidden by the walkway). The Pullman ends on the cars could be made from sheet styrene and shaping half rounds for the darts.

Thanks George!

I was thinking of removing the small ribs in between the larger ones, making them "Dartnaught" Pullman ends (there's an article in an issue of Mainline Modeler that did this on a HO car).  The tabbed side sills could be easily made.

The X31 roof would definitely need a spacer, that's why I was hoping for the X32A, the roof came out even to the sides.

I did read somewhere that the PS1 sides were pretty close to the SAL round-roof cars and need to confirm that too.

I'm determined to get/make a more accurate SAL Turtleback car so I may have to go the extra mile and hack a couple of cars up to do it

Bob,

The PS-1 is a welded car. You don't want to use that for the sides.

Try this car instead.

Other then the roof being round, it's really not like the X31's roof. Check out Smoky Mountains S scale model on Pierre Oliver's Blog.

You might do better to build it up instead of using the Lionel roof.

Thanks again George!

I tried to talk Smokey Mountain into making them in O scale, but he declined.

Atlas makes/made a 1937 AAR Double-Door boxcar that has the correct number of side panels and side sill for a SAL car:

Modify the ends and roof and it would be very close I think.  I would modify this car, but it's the only one I have and can't find any more on the net.

Sure would be nice if the manufacturers would offer these types of different models vice offering non-prototypical repaints or reruns from the same old mold.
