I'm new to Lancaster, PA. as I moved here about a year ago.

Yesterday my Fiancee Shannon and I decided to drive to Strasburg Railroad since I was never there.  We knew it was closed for the rest of the day, but we were close so it didn't matter.  While driving there Shannon told me there was supposedly a motel where you can sleep inside of a Caboose.  It was practically aside of Strasburg Railroad.  Maybe everyone knows all about this already, but I figured it was worth sharing.

This was not planned so the pictures are not the greatest.  Also a Wedding was riding through interrupting my picture taking, haha.  Oh well.

Note that those photos are at the Railroad Museum of PA, across the street from the Strasburg Rail Road.  The two institutions are completely separate, but are commonly confused with each other.  The RRMPA hopes to build more shelter for their equipment one of these days.

Awesome!  I knew it was the Museum side, but honestly didn't realize it was separate.  Thanks for letting me know.  I'll correct my post so I'm not spreading confusion.

There are several RR related places to visit in that same area. The PA RR museum, Strasburg RR, Red Caboose motel and Restaurant, and the Choo-Choo Barn layout and Hobby shop just around the corner on RT 721 I think that's the rt number. You'll have a blast discovering all the other things to see and do in the greater Lancaster area.

Everywhere I looked there was something train related.  www.etrainshop.com is probably the hobby shop you are referring to.  Right aside of the Red Caboose Motel there is The National Toy Train Museum www.nttmuseum.org  I'm just getting serious about the Hobby, but always loved trains.  Guess this was a good area to move to.

Plus twice a year, there's York, just 30 miles away!

Welcome to the Forum.

There is also the Strasburg Station Hobby shop in one of the outlet centers near Lancaster. If you're a sportsman, Lancaster Archery is a must see. Check out the Green Dragon in Ephrata on Fridays, and there is a flea market in Manheim right off rt 72. Several volunteer fire companies have Mud Sales which are a lot of fun.

OK, I'll ask.

What's a Mud Sale?

Ed

They are auctions of all kinds of tools, housewares, equipment, crafts, and collectibles. The term Mud Sale comes from the fields where they're held that tend to get muddy after rain. Many are held in March and April.

That wedding was being filmed for the TV show My Big Fat American Gypsy wedding. It will be broadcast in February next year.

Planning our wedding, my fiance suggested we stay in The Red Caboose Motel during our honeymoon. I kissed her. Last year she retired, and she found the receipt for our caboose. We took it there, and we asked to stay there again for our 30th anniversary. The cabooses had been repainted and renumbered, but the General Manager tracked down our caboose and we celebrated our 30th anniversary there.

The food in the dining car (a refurbished Pennsylvania Railroad P70 coach) is superb.

I highly recommend a trip to New Freedom, about 6 miles west of Exit 4 on I-83 (Shrewsbury). This replica of a Civil War era 4-4-0 rolled out of [David] Kloke Locomotive Works in May, 2013. The Reader Railroad in Arkansas built wooden passenger cars for her that summer. This train runs on the historic Northern Central Railway between New Freedom and Hanover Junction, where President Abraham Lincoln changed trains when he delivered his Gettysburg Address. Here is the link to schedules, fares and special events.

Last time I was at the Red Caboose Motel was 1985 I believe. I got to see 1223 and 7002 running on Strasburg, pulling the bright red and yellow coaches (now they are all a darker shade of red) as well as 90 and 31. The cabooses used to be all red. I wonder why SRR doesn't have a flag stop at the motel, and let people get on or off there instead of driving over to the station. A stop like Groff's Grove in both directions. But then the SRR would have to have a ticket booth there so that people could pay, or people could pay the conductor once on board. There's supposed to be a PRR 4-6-0 running at Strasburg sometime, it's from Long Island, not the RRMoPA.
