Back in 2004 Lionel's Volume 2 Catalog in it was announced that they would be coming out with this locomotive. Now am very much a scale train buyer however when I saw this engine in the catalog I decided that I would want this locomotive. It features smoke. a headlight on each end and a nice whistle. I figured that I would need two of them to pull the longer freight trains that I run so I purchased two of the Reading model. They cost me $80.00 each. To my surprise each of them can pull 20 free wheeling freight cars and maybe a few more. Now with two of them double heading what a nice sight with lots of smoke and side rods moving and pulling all those cars they are a pair of mighty mites indeed. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I have the same Reading model, plus the seasonally themed Transylvania RR and North Pole Central versions. What amazed me was how solid of a locomotive this was for the initial street price, which was frequently less than $100. It's virtually all metal.

That locomotive and MTH's equally solid C-16 Docksider (based on the famous B&O engines) are easily among my favorites and, in my opinion, are among the best four- to six-wheel steamers available in three-rail O gauge.

The problem that Timothy Lewis' dad had concerning the smoke coming out of the bottom of this locomotive is the overheating of one of the components on the reverse board. I had the same thing happen to one of my Reading 0-6-0s mentioned above. I contacted the Lionel Service Department and the lady there told me it would cost around $60.00 for the labor and $28.00 for a new reverse board and of course the shipping cost to Lionel. I found a store that still had a new locomotive of the same Reading model for about the same cost of having mine repaired. Now my out of service 0-6-0 makes a great paper weight.
