A couple of years ago I picked up a non-powered Atlas GGM&O F3 here on the Forum. It is a thing of beauty. From time to time I would post in the Wanted section looking for it's twin - either powered or dummy, to no avail.  I enjoyed running it on the layout with a short passenger/mail train which consisted mostly of setups for photos. I rarely 'ran' it as the only other GM&O motive power was a pair of RK RS3s but the colors didn't match very well.

Last year I obtained several diesels from another member who was narrowing his roster and among them was an Atlas Santa Fe Warbonnet F3A single. I contemplated having it painted to match my original unit but figured I'd keep looking for awhile. I wrote to Atlas and spoke with Bill in service. He told me to be patient as he may come across one sometime.

6 months later I spoke with him again a York and he encouraged me to keep trying so I did. Finally a couple of months ago I wrote again and he said give him a few days, and sure enough, he found a cab for me.

I pulled the handsome Warbonnet cab (visible in the rear of photo) and sprayed the chassis black. Swapping out the scale pilot and coupler held me up for a couple of weeks as it involved cutting some of the metal on the powered unit. Just this evening I did it and mounted the new GM&O cab - she certainly looks great now as an AA.

I'm offering the Santa Fe cab for sale  if anyone is interested. These Atlas models are first rate!

Thanks Keith - They are a favorite!

When I posted the photo I noticed that I didn't seat the pilot fully on the right side facing camera but have just now corrected it.

I don't know of very many of these around. Mike Caruso and Mr Muffin each have a set but that is all I know of...

A friend here in Mobile (appropriately) has one of the Atlas GM&O F3 A's; I have

the MTH PS2 GM&O ABA F3 set, but they are really models-of-a-model (Lionel PW F3),

and, beautiful as they are, have never run worth a flip. When the Atlas GM&O units came

out I said "oh, I already have the MTH units..." and let them go. My friend refuses to

sell me his - but he should, as I am actually a former GM&O employee...right?

Back in First-Generation diesel days the GM&O was EMD road power (F-units and E-units) on the "North End" (St Louis to Chicago and KCMO), and Alco road power (FA/FB's and PA's) on the "South End" (St Louis to Mobile and New Orleans), so I was never around

the F3's - but I would sure love that Atlas unit.

Strangely, the GM&O was all Alco for its switchers, North to South, in the First-Gen

days.

Atlas: if you re-issue the GM&O F's, I'm all over them. Just sayin'.
