(For my take on York itself, please see my thread "Impressions of my first York – October 2012" in the York TCA Forum section)

After leaving our house Tuesday and spending that night just outside of Columbus OH, we arrived Wednesday shortly afternoon at Patrick H.’s home. Patrick and his wife Jackie showed us a wonderful time Wednesday afternoon and evening. They also drove us to Pittsburgh and gave us a grand tour of the area, culminating with a wonderful dinner.

Most of you have seen Patrick’s layout in pictures and videos he has posted in the OGR forum. When seen in person, Patrick’s layout is in a class of its own. Surrounded by beautifully crafted striated rock walls, highly detailed structures and scenery, the trains come alive. I had the opportunity to run Patrick’s trains at the same time as he, his friend Lou, and even Judy operated trains! This was a new experience for me (and for Judy!)

If you have been impressed by Patrick’s layout and how quickly he built his work of art (and who hasn’t been impressed?) you would be equally or even more mesmerized by his house. Not only is it large and beautiful, but he and Jackie built it themselves in 18 months! What an unforgettable experience!

Thursday evening we went to Friday’s, and that was when we really appreciated the significance of the York show, the OGR Forum, and the dedicated modelers. Judy and I sat at the table with Eliot, AlexM, Alex’s Dad, Mike, and Dave (from Down Under). Throughout the evening, other OGR forumites stopped by to say hello and share a few stories. We had a great time, and Judy commented how nice everyone had been as she engaged many of the forumites in conversation. York is York – a great 3-rail train event, but the Thursday at Friday’s with the OGR forumites results in the unique camaraderie experience that is unequalled.

Friday morning we went to the Lionel Users meeting at Alexander’s, and again enjoyed the presentation and the friends at the table. Judy said that the guys from New York and New Jersey (Ben & company) were really nice.

We had a great time at York, but it was the OGR friends above, plus the many more whom I finally had the pleasure to meet in person, that have convinced us to make the 1900-mile trip again next year!

Thank you, OGR!

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thank you for posting these photo's and this thread. It was a pleasure to meet Judy and you, I must say to all forum member's, Alex and Judy are two of the kindest people who you can meet. My dad and I had a wonderful time with all of you and will will be back again in April. I also will bring my wife. I'm so happy to be a part of this forum, because I've met wonderful friends for life.

Thanks again Alex and Judy, see you guys in April.

Alex

On our way back home yesterday Judy and I were talking about all that had transpired over the weekend. I was in HO for over 30 years, and met perhaps five or six modelers during that entire time. My only connection to others with the same interest was limited to the articles I read in Model Railroader magazine.

Now, with the internet and the OGR forum, no place is too far to befriend a person with similar interests as ours. In just the last four years I have emailed and talked on the phone with more guys that in my 30 years in HO. This past weekend at York I met perhaps 20 or so from the forum and magazine. How small is our world now, and how nice to be able to welcome someone whose home is about 9,000 miles away (correct, Dave?)

Alex,

I don’t believe that we will be going in April, but we will go in October for sure. However, we may drive out East before October since we now have so many new friends in PA, NY and NJ, besides York.

Alex

I also have to say that I have met so many wonderful folks over the past few years in this hobby...the OGR forum has made that happen.  In addition, I don't want to forget the impact that our new group, the Mid America 3-Railers, made up from both the OGR forum members and those that have joined that are not active here, have added so much to the expansion of our friendships across many lands and backgrounds....

Thanks to you all..

Alan

Alex,

It was very nice to finally meet you as well as your wife Judy. I look forward to seeing your layout one day in person.

You are correct about the relationships that are built through this hobby. The few people Ive met in the 4 yrs that Ive been in the hobby have been great.... Nick C, Marty E, Andy H. Vince P, Patrick H, and many more. The info as well as the friendships that have developed has been unparalleled.

You are also correct about Patricks layout..... A class of its own to say the least!

Sounds like you had a great week !  Yes alot of very wonderful people here on the forum.

Alex ,

I ll send ya a personal email, but one thing i would like others to know who have not met you yet is that you and your wife are of  the finest stock  out there ,especially Judy. LOL Sorry i couldnt stay to make it to Thursday night at Fridays, had other priorities Friday morning. Thanks for the visit and kind words.Come back soon.

Alex,

We will certainly do that! I’ll let you know.

Chris,

Yes – there will be more opportunities next year, and we’ll know better how to get around.

Louis,

At first I didn’t know whose post yours was, I read it to Judy, and she said, “Lou!”. Duh – I should have known. It was great meeting you as well, and she said that it was fun running trains with you too. We’ll do it again next year.

Rich,

Thanks, and it was nice seeing your buildings, etc., nicely displayed. We sincerely wish great success for Korber Models.

that explains a lot Ted  I couldn't agree more. It was very nice making a new friendship Alex and Judy, hope the York tradition is in your future plans. now I have to figure out how I only had $5 left in my pocket and didn't buy a single train item.

I am getting better at it   You didn't feel a thing
