The railroad world has an amazing number of variations of the color red, especially the reddish-brown pigment made from iron oxide. To keep track of the colors and help me select and match paints, I painted this gondola in shades of red.

From left: Wisconsin Central maroon, caboose red, Milwaukee Road maroon, roof red, tuscan, D&RGW freight car red, light freight car red, boxcar red, special oxide red, oxide red, mineral red, roof brown. All colors on this side are Polly Scale acrylics.

Colors 1

The other side has Floquil caboose red and boxcar red at one end, and three versions of UP Armour Yellow at the other.

Colors 2

As you can see, there is a very large variation in the Armour Yellow. The Badger is very yellow and saturated, the Polly S is kind of pale and washed out, and the Floquil seems to me to have the best balance - but those of you who are UP fans can weigh in with your opinion. Maybe the Badger is actually closer to what a car would look like fresh from the paint shop.

That's very clever, although I'm finding myself in agreement with Rusty's post below.
