This came with engine, what does it do ?

Programs the engine info into your Legacy Remote so you don't have to do it manually.

My guess is that you don't have a legacy remote if your not sure what that item is.

I plan to add a TMCC to my DCS system and use the DCS remote.

Would I need it in this case?

No, but dont throw it out either.

You need a TMCC base and a special cable(MTH 50-1032). You should watch Eric Siegel's videos on it at this link: Legacy/DCS

You don't "need" the module at all. It just makes it easier to enter the loco data into the controller. But, without a Legacy controller, it is entirely useless.

There is a convenient book that comes with the engine, and it tells you all the stuff, including what the orange module is for.

when you get the legacy system then ask what to do with it and we can tell you, but until then don't loose it.
