My understanding is that there is little value in changing from ps2 to ps3 if the ps2 system is working properly.  The ps3 system uses a capacitor instead of a battery but you can get the same thing by installing a bcr for about $22.

Don't really care what it looks like.......

Like JHZ cost is a factor.  I have one PS2 loco in my shop right now. A MTH PRR Q2 that I was going to put a Dallee DCRU in and run....but if it could be upgraded to PS3....might do that if it can be done DYI. Thats the INFO I was looking for.....could look like a rock as long as it works!!! THX

I got one too.  It's going into a PRR T-1 for a customer.  Installation looks just like the Proto 2 kits except no battery and therefore no charging jack to install.  Board package is same footprint and profile as PS2 3 volt boards.

i guess this will be the same board package we'll use to replace Proto2 boards when some components on those become obsolete (that may have happened already).

Uh oh! Can I still upgrade with the same motor diode for a G scale??

What's the difference with a PS32??

Maybe I'd better put her into an O gauge to be safe.

I don't think so yet.  Quillable was a flash issue.  You can load a PS-3 sound file, but it depends if the features are on it.  MTH was still working on the universal flash file to handle Trolley, Pantographs, etc...  I heard trolley is now done.   G

Hello Gary,

Yes your locomotive can be upgraded, however the cost of kit and installation is unknown at this time.  Please contact us off list at sales@jrjunction.com and we can go from there.  Thank you for your past business with us!

At this time only the Authorized Service Stations and a few retail customers received these kits.  They are intended for Beta testing by the Authorized DCS Upgrade Centers, of which we are one.

The rest of the upgrade kits will ship by June of this year and MTH Authorized Dealers should be able to order them at that time.

At the moment the new kits are the same price as the Proto-Sound 2.0 kits, however that may be subject to change by the time the new ones are released in June.

Unfortunately the kits we received are already spoken for as we have a backlog of customer upgrade jobs to do ourselves.  When we are able to order more, I will have them available in-stock for purchase on our web site www.jrjunction.com or phone ordering.

As soon as I have more information on availability and pricing, I will post it.

Thanks!

When available please post the cost of conversions (including labor) using the PS-3 "diesel kit" for converting PS-1 diesels and PS-2 diesels. I would expect that the PS-2 conversions would be less complex and time consuming and less costly.

John, I need PS3 kits because I like running my trains under DCC. However, only one of the engines I want to upgrade actually has a fully functioning PS2 system in it. The others are PS1s and two Lionel engines.

This is some very exciting news. I look forward to June. Can't wait to start upgrading these engines.
