I have two MTH Remotes, and they date back to 2006.  During that time I have had a thumbwheel break on each one of them.  The first was probably 5 years ago, and the second last year.  I had the first one replaced by Chuck at Mizels, (which I was very happy with).  He even returned the broken one.  Then this past year another one broke, (other remote), so I got one from GGG and put it in myself.  (last September).

Haven't been in the train room much, but did notice one remote scrolls down, the other (one I did scrolls up).  So I figured I must have wired it wrong.  Took it apart and everything looked fine.  THEN I came to the OGR Forum and did a Search on Thumbwheels.  Sure enough there was a discussion of people with same problem.  Some talk about doing a reset, and other talk that the wires may not be the same.  Need to reverse them.  So I looked at the old switches and as you would guess one was wired RED-Yellow-Green, with the Green closest to the Thumb Wheel.  The other was Green-Yellow-Red, with the Red closest to the Thumb Wheel.  So I reversed the wires (Red & Green), and now they both scroll correctly.  Scroll Thumb Wheel down, the indicator goes down.

Bottom line once again the Forum is a fantastic source of information !!!  (Purpose of my post!)  Thanks Guys!!!

The thumbwheel is the Achilles heel of the MTH remote IMO.  They could have used an optical solution that would be pretty much trouble-free, but they went with a mechanical one that is a PITA.

Yes. Or they could have designed the piece that holds the wheel so it doesn't fatigue and crack. There was a good article in OGR magazine on how to replace the wheel. I don't have the solder skills so I sent mine to GGG when it broke. One thing I took away from the article is to go easy on the thumb wheel press. I also stopped using the Quickspeed function.

Gentlemen,

Over the years I have had both my DCS hand held remote control wheels replace, and both units made fully rechargeable, everybody knows I am a big DCS kind guy, Barry totally corrupted me when the system 1st hit the market, and I have never recovered from it.  However I have been yelling for a new upgraded DCS Hand Held Remote Control for years now, one that eliminates the mechanical wheel, is fully rechargeable, and controls wireless Switches.  IMO the WIFI Control should have been put on the back burner, till the HHRC was upgraded!
