Looking through "B&O Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment," I infer that the colorful "comet" paint scheme was not used for a new boxcar series beginning in late 1957. The book also infers that only a few cars were painted in the "comet" scheme; I assume, then, that the oxide red paint scheme was seen along with the more colorful paint scheme.

rex desilets,

Thank you, again.

This means, in addition to the fancy paint schemes, there has to be a Sentinel box and a Time Saver Service box, both in oxide red.

So far, I have one of each of Atlas O's fancy paint scheme box cars and one order for a Atlas O, oxide red Time Saver Service box car.

So, in total there should be four B&O LCL box cars, two fancy and two oxide red.

Now, to find a 1:48 scale Sentinel, oxide red, box car.

Thank you,

Ralph-RJL

Actually, as I recall*, B&O's "Sentinel Service" was not LCL.  It was basically a 'tracking' service, whereby a car loaded on the B&O and consigned to a location on the B&O would be monitored, and the shipper/consignee notified if it encountered any delay.  [ There would of course be an element of expediting in this.]

Hence, a boxcar with "Sentinel Service" was basically a rolling billboard, and not necessarily in that service -- but they could of course be used in LCL as well as carload service.   I imagine some Sentinel customers were freight forwarders shipping LCL.

The B&O's historical society offers reprints of Sentinel Service [ and Timesaver ]manuals, I believe.

Best regards, SZ

*From reading late 40's 'Railway Age" magazines;  I no longer have these.
