just upgraded TIU & Handheld to 5.0. When attempting to add engines, my iPad app displays "timed out"

Aw, c'mon, how about some information??

  • What happens if you attempt to run the same engine with the DCS remote?
  • What are you doing, exact;ly, from the time that you turn on the lights in the train room?
  • Exactly what happens with the TIU and its red LED?
  • Exactly what happens with all of the LEDs on the WIU?

You don't say what level of DCS App and WIU firmware you're using. If the DCS App is version 1.1, the WIU firmware must also be version 1.1.

If you're operating in MTH mode, with 2 devices having the DCS App active at the same time, there's a possibility that you may have tripped across a relatively new bug. Regardless, try using just one device, either the iPad or the iPhone, and power down the other device completely  by holding in the power button and shutting the device down completely.

Last, I've seen one instance where having the WIU connected to the TIU with a USB cable while also having a serial cable hanging off the TIU's serial port, with nothing connected on the other end of the cable, can cause a time-out situation.

Thought I'd give. Recap, answering all of Barry's questions:

I downloaded the new app onto my IPad and IPhone the first week they were available. Just prior to upgrading my hand held and TIU (new model w/USB port) I upgraded my IPad with the $4.99 upgrade.

Upgrading the Handheld & TIU was very easy and flawless. Following Barry's instructions in his DCS Book, I attempted to add locos however both my iPad and iPhone kept timing out after 3-4 seconds.  As you can see by Barry's post, my IPad & IPhone were at version 1.1, the WiFi unit must not have been. I phoned Muffins trains to inquire if it had been flashed. He wasn't sure, so we walked through the DCS instructions online for the WIFi. (These instructions are very well written and easy to follow) I flashed the WiFi, the system works fine now.

Ill try and use both the IPad & IPhone soon to see if Barry's theory is correct.
