I thought I'd go straight to the experts here and ask for some help on how to produce a convincing looking rusted roof for my Lionel grain elevator kit.

What brand and colors do you use?

Paint or chalks?

Can you post some close up photos so I can get a good look?

Thanks in advance!!

Pete

Typical hint: In a nutshell, I dribble alcohol over Testor's Dullcote to create lime scale and hard water deposits on water tanks, tank cars, and plumbing. When combined with a rusty chalk slurry, the effects can be quite effective

Or, Walthers has this...

A I M Products Scenery Solutions Wash 4 Ounce Bottle

Real Rust Walthers Part #  110-973, p. 315 Walthers 2012 HO Scale Reference A scale, Retail: $5.95, currently in stock at Walthers

There are lots of suppliers of rust powders....Bar Mills, Tamiya, A I M Products, etc.,

and, again, Micromark's...

However, I, also, use rust-colored paints...airbrushed, brushed, thin washes, etc..  It all looks good...some better than others...experience will get you there.  Jump in!!

KD is right, it all looks good. you might try this, too: scrape off some of the rust and black colored chalks into separate cups or other holders. spray the metal with gray primer or rust primer if depending on how rusty you want the roof. dip your brush into a rust paint, then dip into the chalk residue and apply as you like. what you'll get when it dries is rust with texture. you can lightly spray with dullcote if you are going to handle it too much.
