After I change the smoke wick, I can’t seem to get the MTH smoke units to perform as good as when they came from the factory,  I have read past posts and have tried “bunching” the wicks and squeezing the resistors together. They don’t seem to smoke as strongly as they use to and the smoke does not seem to come out straight anymore. MTH has an animation on their site, but it does not give details on how to attach the wick. Any tips? How much wick do you use? I have tried the tiki torch wick, which looks the same as the original wicking and the original but either way, it is not as good as the original factory performance.

Good question, I just redid a smoke unit on a MTH PRR T-1 and I have the same result.  I was wondering if you should not put any wicking right in front of the square hole from the fan unit but just between the resistors.  Hopefully someone will chime in with the proper technique.  There was plenty of wicking in the unit I redid and it really fills the entire area around the resistors.

The secret to getting really great smoke is to not block the air hole between the 2 chambers of the smoke unit. I use 1 MTH wick and squeeze it between the resistors as far to the one side away from the square hole. I fold the remaining wick down as I lower the board on trying to keep it clear of the air hole. I use a dental pick to help push it where needed.

Paul has the right configuration.  I make sure the wick slides between the resisters and is bunched into the bottom of the chamber.  The air flow must be kept clear and use plenty of smoke fluid.  When adding fluid I always add a half dropper full and wait at least one minute before start up.  If I don't wait I get a lot of smoke for a short period of time.  Give the wick time to soak up the fluid.
