Tips on painting car shells

Inspired by several photos on the forum of custom modified and painted cars I thought I'd give it a try myself. With this in mind I want to reach out to the experts for your top tips and tricks for painting.

The two cars I am going to paint are shown below. The plan is to paint them into MOW units.

I would assume a light sanding is needed to remove/reduce the current decoration? If sanding is recommended, what grit do you use?
