Since losing our former layout we're now restricted to a short bench track powered by a Z1000 brick through the TIU. Several times since setting this up I've experienced blown fuses in the TIU. In 3 years on the home layout we never had a blown fuse. The obvious difference is the Z brick in lieu of the Z4000 used previously. Why is this happening?

Z1000 fuse is not as "quick" as those in the Z4000. I believe the Z1000 has a 6amp breaker. I also have experienced blown fuses using the Z1000 when I I've had the truck of a locomotive not siting on the track fully.
Sam,
Are the blown fuses happening for no apparent reason, e.g., no short circuit or derailment?
I'f so, I'd bet that it's not the Z1000. Rather, it'ssomething in the way this simple piece of track is wired, or an intermittent short in the track itself.
Some movement is causing this to occur.
My omission Barry - There was a derailment or similar occurrence causing a definite short at each incident.
The fuse in the TIU is 20 amps, so that breaker in the Z-1000 is defective. Do you have a Power House Lionel brick? G
I agree with GGG, I've replaced defective breakers in a few Z1000's over the last few months, some were open, but others would never trip, even on a direct short. I've had countless shorts on the track with my Lionel PH180 bricks through the TIU, never had any fuse issues.
Gentlemen,
I use the 10 Amp Scott type breakers in front of every transformer, even the Z4K, have never ever blown a TIU fuse sense putting them in. I do not trust the transformer breakers and the TIU fuse is a pain to change, especially when all you need do is cut the power and reset the Scott 10 Amp breaker, by pushing it back down into place. Seems the Z-1000 breakers are a might slow sometimes, especially as the Z-1000 ages. However it seems to vary on every individual Z-1000, some are sensitive and others seem to break way to late, IMO if you want to eliminate all TIU blown fuse problems, use the Scott type 10 Amp breaker banks in front of the all the different power supplies.

No but I think I'll be on the lookout for one now. The Z'z breaker does trip, albeit somewhat late I gather!
