Ernie,

Quick checklist:

  • If you aren't using a Rev. L TIU with a USB port, did you load the drivers for your serial to USB cable, for your version of Windows?
  • Did you make sure to power-on the TIU with the 1/8" stereo jumper cable in place?
  • Is the TIU powered-on? There should be a red LED lit under the cover vent on the top left corner, with the TIU channel inputs facing you.

Some questions:

  • When does the error message appear?
  • Has this TIU ever been successfully upgraded in the past or is this the first time you're attempting to do so?
  • What model (REV. on label on the bottom of the TIU) is this TIU?

For future use, go here:

Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall and select advanced setting on the firewall and set it up to allow the updater program through.

In upgrading my 2 DCS systems to 4.30, I first selected Options in the Loader program and had it try to automatically find the TIU (older one using serial port).  After several minutes, it said it could not find it.  I have only 1 COM port on my PC.  After verifying in Device Manager that my COM port is COM1, I told the loader to use COM1.  The updates for both TIU's and Remotes went off without any problems.  So, it would appear the code in the Loader to automatically find the TIU needs some work.

Vince,

thew code in the Loader Program is just fine. You need to cycle power after any update in order to do the next update.

After working with the Loader Program for 10+ years, I'd bet that when it can't find the TIU , the cause is either operator error or the Windows environment.

Barry,

I experienced the problem with the first TIU that I was updating.  So, there was no power cycling issue.  I followed the instructions in your book.  I suppose it could be my Windows environment.  I'm running Win7 Pro 64-bit.  I had your book up on my second monitor while running the Loader, I did not disable my anti-virus software and I remained connected to my home wired ethernet.  Maybe it could have been one of those items.  In any event, when I told it to use COM1, it worked like a champ.
