The fixed channels 2 & 3 work. they get the same input 18 volts and output 18 volts.. but, when putting in 18 volts on variable 1 & 2, I get little (2 volt) or no output on the channels. . I have checked the fuses in the TIU and everything seems to be working fine. the red light comes on in the TIU when powered and the remote also recognizes the TIU channels. any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong or have done? Where would I look for anything else that might be wrong? Thank You..

Are you selecting the Var1 or Var2 channel with the handheld, to increase the voltage with the thumbwheel?
Lets see if the var channels will work in Fixed mode, As you know, you need full power to the input side of the var channel and the tiu must be turned on with power to fixed 1 or an aux power supply.
Try this one.... Menu/System/DCS set up/ ....high lite the var channel and hit FXD... The FXD key is the same one you would use to put the channel back in var mode.... Just press it again... the remote will tell you what mode you've selected.
The var channel in fxd should come to life after a slight delay.....
If that works the var channel in var mode probably will as well using the TR button.

tried this and the remote says out of range.
hi everybody.. decided to start over. took it all apart and started from scratch. the tiu was not powered from the var 1.. put aux power to it from z1000 power pac. led light lit up.. still no var 1 output.. then did what was suggested under dcs setup from above and hit fdx. then it worked! did it for var 2 and that worked also. disconnect aux power supply to see if var 1 would power tiu and it did. it didn't from the beginning. so i don't really know what was going on except now it works. i will recheck it tomorrow to see if it stays this way. still can' figure out why var1 didn't power it then it did. anyway, I'm keeping aux power on it too. thank you all for your kind and professional input. many, many, many thanks... Pete
Great.... Strange things sometimes happen with dcs. Recycling tiu power can sometimes change the ball game,
The tiu must be powered and Var 1 must have power before trying to set up a var channel. Anyway I suspect it'll work again tomorrow.
FWIW, if you don't already have Barry's book, 'The DCS Companion', I would recommend getting a copy. It is a very good reference for DCS and has a lot of extra info in it. It has been a great help to me in learning, wiring and operating my DCS system.
It is now available from OGR Magazine, in their online store. Available in print or digital copy.
Pete,
I agree definitely pick up a copy of Barry's DCS O Gauge Companion, right here on the OGR. For right now however make sure you check all your wire connections on your TIU, make sure they are tightened correctly, I recommend using good Banana Plugs to assure longevity contact. You may also want to invest in the OGR Video Guide to DCS, a great visual education for DCS, especially for the beginner.

Pete,
disconnect aux power supply to see if var 1 would power tiu and it did
The only way the TIU led red light will stay lit is by powering the AUX POWER INPUT or by powering the FIXED VOLTAGE IN1 channel. The Variable channels and FIXED 2 will not power the TIU.
I can't see the TIU led staying lit without one or the other having power.
Are you sure you didn't have power to FIXED 1 INPUT when you tried this?
