Hello Everyone....so  I smelled a smokey elelctrical smell while running my trains yesterday....never encountered that before... I discovered it was emanating from the TIU...  I touched it and it was VERY hot.... any ideas why? Just going bad perhaps? It is about 10 years old or so ...not sure what  generation...I can say this I was running a very long  freight train at slow speeds  pulled by a  Rail King PRR K-4...the  circuit breaker was tripping....again, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

While the load may have had some effect, it's moe likely that there's a loose retaining nut on the inside of the TIU's binding post for one or more of the TIU channels that you were using.

Take the TIU off of the layout, remove the 6 screws on the bottom and remove the top half of the case. Using a wrench, carefully tighten all of the nuts holding the TIU's binding posts in place until they are snug.
