I have a layout that contains three main lines (each line is approximately 45 ‘ in length)  In addition I have approximately 25-30 ‘ of side tracks for loco storage.  The Track is a mix of Atlas and Scaletrax. I have Atlas and Scaletrax switches. 

Two of the main lines are powered via DCS on channel #1, the rest is powered by channel #2. The two channels are isolated from each other. Power is derived from 1 MTH 4000. The TIU is powered separately from the 4000. All the accessories are powered separately from the 4000. Using the Barry’s DCS guide, power drops are every 5-6 feet. The TIU is one of the first RevL updated completely, the WIU is also updated.

My issue:

While I have signal strengths of 10 throughout the layout, I have two areas - each about 7”-8” in length where my Hudson and Pacific style loco (Premier PS3) stall. I have done everything I can think of, including switching out the track to no avail. 

I have many Premier articulated engines that pass through these areas just fine. I have even added pickup rollers to the tenders of the smaller locos, no change.

I am absolutely stumped.

One other item: 

I have several locos with variable Whistle. Non of them sound good.  The whistles all sound very ‘warbily’ The quality of sound is just terrible. After seeing/hearing many videos of other MTH whistles, mine are definitely not operating correctly.

The fact that they stall means it's a power issue. If the signal is lost the engines keep doing whatever they were doing.

It can be from the tether, to the wheels not carrying power, to something else (broken wire?)

Try and connect the outer rails for a quick test. Check for continuity between the wheels with the engine on it's side. Probably could be corrected by the wiring inside as another post talks about.

This is not a DCS problem.

It is an issue between the locomotives and the track in question that results in the engine losing power. Since you already tried switching out the track, I would expect t that the issue is one of the following that the engine hasn't got a consistent outside rail Common connection. If you have power only to one outside rail and since your two Premier engines are 2-rail/3-rail capable of getting Common on only one side of the engine, you should do two things:

  • First, connect both outside rails together.
  • Second, ensure that the spring on the wireless drawbar is making good contact on the drawbar's connecting pin.
  • If the above doesn't resolve the problem, after ensuring that the 2-Rail/3-Rail switch is in the 3-Rail position, jumper from one side of the engine's wheels to the other.

It's internal to the engines. Most likely, it's due to one of the following:

  • This is the actual whistle. You can contact MTH to ascertain if the whistle sound is intentional, or not.
  • The sound file is incorrect. Again, MTH is your best bet for addressing this possibility.
  • The engine's speaker has a problem. However, if other sounds are unaffected, this is unlikely.
  • Least likely, IMO, would be an issue with the engine's audio amp.

Had the same issue and found out certain engines only. Discovered after very much head scratching that the Alas track connector was just loose enough only when engine was there. AND THIS TRACK WAS BALLASTED! Yet something was moving enough to cause it with one engine only. Drove me nuts for months. Especially since other engines were report 10's in the area.

I love scaletrax but could not get any when I started to build. I just got my boss into trains last year and he is using scaletrax. I wish Mike at MTH would make more of it and a wider variety. I talked to Ross Track at the last WGH Show at Oaks Pa and had an interesting conversation about making transition pieces from  Scaletrax to his track and switches. Hope he follows thru. I know a few with scaletrax that would definitely buy his switches. Glad you got it worked out.

I have a very similar problem at times.  10's all around, good power but then and engine will stall.  Not all engines would stall.  Just some.  I have Scaletrax.

What I found was that the weight of the engine was just enough to loosen the connection of a scaletrax joint.  I resolved the problem by either adding more leads to track sections or soldering rail joints.

Also... If you use the scaletrax clip in lock ons... They can warp and loose connection too.  I have some of those and when I have a problem, I cut the wires and solder them to the track.

Good Luck.  I empathize with your situation.  It's frustrating when all you want to do is run a train, but all you end up doing is troubleshooting.
