fellas.  I recently got a used Rev L TIU.  pretty new.  it had 5.0 installed, but before I hooked up to the layout I upgraded to 6.1 version.  It seems like all went well during the install.  remote says 6.1.  I hooked up the TIU and both fixed 1 and 2 light up.  The engines on the track came on themselves.  I tried adding the engines and nothing came up.  searching for 3 min.. and it said no engine to add.  I reset the TIU.. nothing.

what do you guys think is the issue?  I have the newest O guage companion and it says that I should connect up the remote with the phone cord to the TIU?  would this be something I should do?  then I would think that the board in the remote came loose.

Chris,

Make absolutely certain of two things:

  • That the TIU's red LED is lit and note how many times it blinks before coming on steady.
  • That the TIU's output channel's red post is connected to the center rail and the black post to an outside rail.

Then, with the TIU and remote powered up, press READ and note what is displayed.

Barry, will the TIU feature reset also cure a TIU giving out weak signal from all 4 outputs? Our club recently had a short on the layout that resulted in the internal fuses being blown in the TIU, this caused huge loss of signal in some areas after the fuses were replaced. We swapped out the TIU with another and regained 10s in those same spots.

Hey Chris,

Just to be clear your remote is updated as well?

Also, does the remote "see" the TIU at it's proper address?  i.e. 1, 2, 3 etc...

Lastly, you may try the phone cord idea to tether the remote to the TIU.    I would also carefully open the remote and push down on the board to make sure it's firmly seated.

oh yeah.  updated the code first in TIU, then the remote.  im going to use the cord and see if it works.

Did you test TIU with engine before upgrade?  Fix channels pass power through so that is normal, but it sounds like DCS generator issues with this used TIU.  So it may have a hardware fault.  G

George I did not test it prior,  ill have to look at the red light when I plug it in and then hit Read on remote.

Greg,

do you do hardware repairs on the TIUs? If not is there anyone you would recommend?

I do not do TIU repairs for others.

If the TIU is within warranty, I'd send it to MTH. If it's not, contact forum member GGG using the E-mail address in his profile. He is an authorized MTH tech and is one of the best. He will get you squared away.
