I have not tinkered with the smoke on the Tank Engine, I was happy with the output the way it works currently.  I adhere to the old saying: Don't fix what ain't broken.   I've done a number of other TMCC locomotives.  Basically, I drill out the intake hole and remove any sleeve and repack the smoke wick.  The other mod I do if I'm still not happy is use a 22 ohm resistor to replace the 27 ohm stock one for a bit of extra heat.

Hi John, A bit off topic but related to the K-line Tank. What speed steps do you recommend for Cab-1? And what if I upgrade to Legacy when they become available again? I do not really understand the choices so I run default 32. I also recall reading about issues with the smoke unit if one changes the chuff rate. I do not understand that either and run default chuff. Seems to work fine but I am not sure if I am missing added functionality in the default settings Thanks Fred

My tank engine has had the K-Line cruise module replaced with an ERR Cruise Commander, so I don't have the same chuff generation as you would have with the stock K-Line cruise module.  If you use the K-Line 128 step mode, you can set your CAB2 to R100 mode and have good control with the throttle graph and the keypad icons active.  I run all my ERR stuff in 100 step mode and use R100 as the control type on the CAB2.

For the CAB1, I'd also probably use 128 steps for the K-Line cruise, you get plenty of step resolution.

My chuff rate is determined by a magnet and a reed switch on one of the pilot wheels.  I added a second magnet and get 4 chuff/rev, that works for me.
