I have a Lionel 6-28014 NYC steam engine whose sound unit no longer works.  A short in an MTH passenger car caused the sound to stop working.  The engine responds to TMCC commands, forward, reverse, backup light, coupler, etc., but there is no sound.  Should I just replace the sound card or must I replace the entire receiver and motherboard ?

Well, the receiver has nothing to do with no sound at all, if the engine runs without sound, the issue is in the tender.  First, I'd look for the obvious, something like a loose connection or broken wire.  I'd test the two boards in the tender and see which was causing the issue if nothing obvious shows up.  Replacing stuff willy-nilly isn't the answer.
