Not only is December 7th an incredibly important day in American history, it is also an important day in modern steam history. It was December 7th 1994 that Norfolk and Western number 611 made her final run home to Roanoke. Today we remember the great locomotive that she was, and we continue to hope for a third career in steam. I have posted a link to Kipp Teague's video of 611 on her final afternoon under steam. Yes, the story is that the NYC picked that day because Sundays in December were normally "slow news days", so the new streamlined equipment put on the Empire State Express (the train itself dated back to the 1890's IIRC) would be sure to get lots of news coverage.
