It's Lionel's track and Lionel's recommendation. I would think they should know what's best for maintaining their own products.
I have been using 'GOO GONE" (I think is a Citrus Base) for years. NO PROBLEMS!!!

I'd remember to add 'Simple Green' to the not-recommended list too.
I used Goo Gone and was wondering why over time my track was turning black and my engines losing traction.. Reading the label it states Not recommended for rubber. My traction tires were slowly being desloved by the Goo Gone. You may want to check that out.
How can alcohol deteriorate steel rails? I suppose it could affect non-metal parts.
I have used denatured alcohol for over 10 years with my Lionel Fastrack and have never had a problem with anything. Solutions with any kind of petroleum product in it is not good.

When using GOO GONE, you must dry it off good after applying. In all those years, I have NEVER lost a Traction Tire and it has never turned my Track Black!

Pete-
Check out the thread on this forum by Mikado (Mike Reagan, Lionel) dated 4/8/2012 & titled "Let's talk about cleaning the track". His rationale for stating that alcohol will degrade the track is based on a gross misunderstanding of simple chemistry. Apparently, that flawed logic ended up in the catalog that you mention. Incredible!
