I am mostly a PW guy, but acquired as part of some lots an Illinois Central U36 8669 and Chessie NW2 8556. I've had them on my layout for a few days now, but all the sudden, they can't pull a meaningful consists and I noticed the traction tire leaves inset valley, but doesn't leave the wheel. I have no idea what size or part number these tires are, and with Lionel habitually not stocking parts, where to get them. I have also heard of people using MTH tires, Bullfrog Snot, Silicone Sealant, RTV and other witch's brews.

It looks like I need the 222-108 tires. Anyone concur? What about the alternatives?
The 222-108 is the correct tire. All the way from 1962, and still used today.
Growing up, we had an 8556 Chessie Switcher that had a pronounced wobble to it. A common problem with MPC era locos were aluminum diesel wheels that were cast out-of-round. Also in some cases there is a mold parting line which was not properly removed that cause the wheels to "hop" and throw tires.
Before installing the new tires, invert the loco and apply just enough power to make the wheels turn. Make sure there is not a ridge somewhere along the groove which is supposed to hold the tire. Good luck! -Ted

"Zamak"(or Zamac) was the alloy used for these wheels.
