"Senile" or not, I think Grampa there should be tied to the tracks. As a dog owner, I'm glad to read that little guy was saved.
I hear there is a lot of risk when hitting the emergency stop, and judging by the number of dead deer I see when I am walking near the tracks it not real normal to try it for a small animal.

He probably wasn't going all that fast, and didn't have to use the emergency feature anyway. Typically, the news media has him "coming to a screeching top".
