IMG_2487IMG_2488IMG_2489IMG_2490IMG_2491Hi folks, here are some pictures of my first ever home painted engine.  It was purchased on eBay.  The shell was in pieces, making it "inexpensive." Being made of Bakelite™ it works remarkable well with a good quality super glue. (Loctite 420 - thinner than water )

Here is my help question:  The engine has an AC Pulmore.  I want to convert it to Legacy ERR boards, with Diesel Railsounds.  Since it has been more than 10 years since I did a conversion, I am having a senior moment and don't know what I need.  I find the descriptions on the ERR web site confusing for what I want to end up with.  If you reply, PLEASE list ALL the boards I need including the equivalent to the R2LC if I need one.

Enjoy the engine pictures.  I think I still need to do something to the decals to tone down their shine.  I also think I will add a 3mm LED to/on the rear, and a very bright LED headlight.  I could not think of anyway to easily add illuminated number boards.  I am also open to suggestions there

Very nice job!  To convert to TMCC using ERR components you will:

  • AC Commander
  • Railsounds Commander (ALCO):

The AC commander includes the R4LC board and the Railsounds Commander includes the speaker, so you do not need anything additional.

I recently added these components to a 2343 F3; pretty easy to do.  It gave me good control (no cruise - not possible with the AC motor) and nice sounds but when it runs the roar of the Pulmor and gears will drown out the Railsounds.

I used 3mm LEDs for the headlight and the number boards.  Hot glue and some black paint gave good results plus hot glue is reversible with no damage.  Also, I think you will find that your FA shell is ABS not Bakelite.

Once again, great job.

Don,

Nice job on painting and decalling. You mentioned you want to convert this to LEGACY. To the best of my knowledge, LEGACY upgrades are not yet available from Lionel. ERR, a Lionel Company, only provides upgrades for TMCC. Dan is correct as to what you will need.

Doing an ERR TMCC upgrade is a piece of cake. I've done many upgrades to both steam and diesels.

And best of all, if you run into trouble, Ken at ERR is always there to provide help either by email or over the phone. He's very good at responding and really knows his stuff.

Good luck.

No, it is not a good job of decaling at all!
At least not yet, and, he admitted more work needs to be done!

You can see from the silvering that the decal is not laying down on the paint in most areas. As was mentioned before, before applying the decals, spray with a light coat of something satin or glossy to get a smooth surface. Let dry then apply the decals using a setting solution such as Micro-Sol & Micro-Set. These help soften the decals so that they lay down on the surface and into mold lines or over details that are above the surface. Sometimes using a soft brush or Q-Tip to help squeegee out the air is a big help, but, be careful not to tear the decal when doing this. Just roll the brush/Q-Tip over the area. A thin brush can be used to get the softened decal to lay down into a mold line.

If these decals have not yet been overcoated, you may still be able to get them to set down by using a setting solution. If they have been overcoated, sorry, you'll just have to redo the whole thing.
