I found this interesting so I tallied up the results.  Average of the 70+ responses, neglecting those few who say for some reason they can run none at the moment, is 4.6 trains.  Here is the distribution.  The most popular numbers of trains to run is 3, with a little less than a quarter of all respondents saying that is the number they run.

I can safely  run 3 right now on my 8x12. If I'm Really careful, I might be able to add another short one to the outer loop, but that's usually more stress than I wanted in the first place.

Future plans dictate an around-the-ceiling double, so one day it might be more.

According to Lee I'm a total conformist, running with the big crowd!

.

In total in can run 5 trains simultaneously, and soon that will jump to 7.

My railroad has a single track mainline with a large loop and a connected folded loop. With DCS, my brain can handle 3 trains simultaneously. However, there are 3 double ended sidings, so for variety, I can swap trains very easily .

The El has a large double track loop, so I can run 2 El trains simultaneously without needing full time control. One of the El trains has PS2 with programmed stops and auto reversing.

There is a point to point trolley loop under construction which will have 2 bumper cars running when its finished.

I have an "operations" focused layout and I use DCC with radio throttles.    For an operating session, I use 7 operators with 7 separate throttles.     4 run the mainline, 2 work the yard, and one does the industrial switching in Connellsville.     So technically, 7 trains or locomotives could be moving at once.   However, it is a single track mainline with passing sidings, so more often than not, 1-3 are waiting in a siding while something is coming or going.     Or a switcher is waiting for the main to clear.     So it is possible and feasible for 7 to move at the same time, for a short period of time.    More like 4 moving simultaneously most of the time.

Yes, old thread, but fun to see how many people's response will change.  I was carpet last time, but now I have a layout in process.  When finished it'll be a double loop with inside yard.  Right now only the outside loop is powered, and I have run 2 trains pretty regularly on it, and have up to 3.  I could in like manner run two on the inside loop.  The inside loop is also the main track for most of the yard, so I fowl the main to switch the yard, but it does have a section I could switch.  So at max 6 trains, but most normally it'll probably be 3 trains running.

When friends are over, we can let 4, O Guage, trains run continuously, plus an around the room, elevated above the doors and through the wall a nice LGB G Guage train. Now that I am retired, I plan to utilize the Route Control of the Legacy command system, this should allow us the ability to run up to 6 trains simultaneously. I like the ability of simply letting the trains run slowly on their individual loops so visiting with friends is possible. If your ever in Tennessee, come see me. Happy Railroading

I have six main lines. Two are very long, two are fairly long and two are relatively short. I have run two trains at once on four of the main lines and one train on the other two, so 10 at once. If I am running 10 trains, on the lines where I am running two trains, I run them at a very slow speed to ensure I can react quickly if anything goes wrong. On the two longest main lines, I am sure I could run three trains on each, but that would really be pushing things without an additional operator.  I also have a point to point trolley.

How many trains can be run at once? depends if you mean circle trains or trains independent of each other. If you said only circuit trains I would answer none. Zero.

If you want to know how many trains can be run independent of each other on my layout I would say two with one operator and four with three operators as there are four separate districts on the layout all with their own controls and locomotives and all linked together so that they can be interchanged. My club has two mainlines. Each can run 2 trains conventionally at a time using block control with left throttle/right throttle/off  switches for each block. That's 4.

We also have three small loops and two subway loops which adds 5 more.

We have an out and back single track with Dalee auto reverse and station stop control - 1 more

That's 10 total.

We are in the process of completing an additional dog bone loop which was started last year. That will give us 11 trains running simultaneously.

The additional dog bone has been completed. We can now run 11 trains at once. We have storage tracks for about 15 additional trains.
