This coming weekend, some friends and I are headed to Baltimore to visit the B&O museum and Ft. McHenry.

Are there any good, easy-to-get-to train shops off of I83?

Also, anyone have suggestions for a good place to get lunch close to the museum or fort?

You're coming from the land of the HATED Steelers?  Come down the turnpike, get off at Breezewood, and take 70 East toward Baltimore.  Exit at 81 North(Exit 26), take the Halfway Blvd Exit to Burhan's Blvd to The Train Room in Hagerstown.  It is a multiple room MUSEUM of Postwar and Prewar Trains. It is the most wonderful display of MO MOZINGO.  Then call Alan Miller so he can share your experience with the rest of the Forum.  Ron

MB Klein is worth visting.  Be aware that this is a mail order place with the show room as an added benefit.  More in the back than out front.  Having said that, they will get anything you need - just use the in store PC, look up item, and they will get for you.  If into HO or N, they have LOTS of stuff out to look at.  Even if not into that gauge, worth looking at!

As far as lunch goes, there is an Irish restaurant near the Inner Harbor:  McDonald's.

There is a nice Irish Pub located close to M.B. Klein.  It's on York Road.  When you walk out of M.B.Klein drive to the right.  Once you get to the stopsign at the top of the hill. (York Road) Make a right and the resturant will be on your left a couple miles down the road.  If you pas the Fair Grounds you have gone too far.

Andy;

If you're in the mood for Italian food, from the museum you are not far from Little Italy.  When you come out of the parking lot, take a right on Pratt St and go about a mile.  Go past the Inner Harbor and you'll see the signs for Little Italy.  My personal favorite restaurant is Sabatino's but they're all good.

I figured that mid-summer would be the safest time for a group of Steelers fans to venture into Baltimore...

Unfortunately, Hagerstown is way out of the way, since we will be coming from Lancaster.  Will have to put the Train Room on the list for a future visit.

If you come down I70 you could swing by the Train Depot in Mount Airy, MD. If you want to see some CSX action you could always go to St. Denis, a popular rail fan hot spot. You can catch lots of trains from the Capital Subdivision and Old Main line. Anyway have a safe trip and remember Baltimore is still Steelers country!

Well, you're likely going to miss a couple of really good ones, but my list for the general area would definitely include The Train Room, Catoctin Mountain, and MB Klein.

MB Klein (modeltrainstuff.com on line) is an all-scales store, and they stock in depth...always did, dating back to when they were located in the heart of downtown Baltimore.  I have a couple of Z scale engines on order with them now.  They stock more Z than just about any dealer I know of.

Maybe you should forgo Fort McHenry and just travel around the train stores.  There are a few more goods ones in the general area if by general you mean 150 mile radius.  Just Trains of Delaware is off of I95 on Route 279 just across the State line.  North east of Lancaster is Barry's Train Shop at 2 W High St, Elizabethtown, PA.  Cool Trains 106 W Main Street Salunga, PA 17538

If you are coming from Lancaster you may not want to go west to I-83. There is a much shorter,quicker way to Baltimore using PA route 222 south to route 372 to 74 which becomes MD 165. This would take you quite close to The Forest Hill Station, an exclusively train shop in an old Ma and Pa Railroad station. From there, you can get to MB Klein in about 35 minutes and it is on the way to downtown Baltimore.

If interested put a post and I will provide more thorough directions.
