I played Microsoft's Train Simulator (MSTS) back when it was the sim to have.  I got every add on I could get my hands on.  IMHO it's still the best one out there as for being able to just go and drive, which is all I was ever interested in, so I can't speak for the missions (Or whatever they called them.).  So I was excited for MSTS2, and sad when it got canned.  If I remember correctly, most of the team ended up leaving MS at one point and formed a group to try to get what was left of MSTS2 finished and released (Under a different name of course.) but also wasn't able too.  It's my understanding that it did morph into Train Simulator (TS) that you can get on Steam.  I did get a copy in 2012 I think, and last I checked (In 2015.) it gets auto updated to the most recent version (Now TS2017).  What I did play of it, it did feel very much like MSTS.  But sadly there were just too many controls to play with (Even with simple controls.), and it didn't seem as natural and intuitive as MSTS to play.  I couldn't just get a train going and enjoy the view like I could with MSTS.  I really seems geared for doing the missions, not free driving, so I really haven't done much with it.

Of course, once you've done live steam (1/4 scale 16" gauge oil fired.) no sim really cuts it anymore.  I rather run my model trains over sim too.
