Hello All,

I have aquired and I'm in the process of building various Intermountain and Red Caboose freight car kits. I want to store then together, not in their individual boxes. Does anyone know of any ready made storage boxes available? I've thought of making my own using plastic storage bins but came up short on foam for the lining. I've also experimented with bubble wrap, but didn't like the final outcome. Any ideas are welcome and appreciated. Thank you.

Not aware of anything commercially available at this time.  There are some of the heavier gauge shipping containers (double walled) that you can cut down.  If you hang onto the material you cut away you can make dividers to partition the box.  I use whit tissue paper to wrap the cars and/or locomotives. It's cheap, works well and is usually acid free.  You can add a layer of thin foam rubber (like cushion shelf liner) to the bottom of the box if you want to keep stuff from rolling around.

Two suggestions based upon info from close friends in the art and museum moving/storage world...

Never let bubble wrap touch anything. It releases gases and the plastic will stick to many things. As a protective outer layer it is fine for short term (like mailing) but always have a barrier layer between the item and the bubble wrap.

Second, try making your own boxes from sheet cardboard. Yes, it takes a little time but you can then make boxes the exact size you need. A good sharp knife (like an Olfa), a straight edge, some tape and a glue gun...
