You can go to Elkhart Indiana, about an hour drive +/-. There is the New York Central Museum there.  Lots to see - Including the only surviving NYC steam engine - A Mohawk (It is not operational) .  Plus right next door to the museum is a very busy 4 track mainline (Not sure CSX or NS) for for good train watching.  Nothing in Shipshewana itself.

Lets not forget that the St Louis Museum Of Transport also has a New York Central Mohawk.

OK - "Shipshewana" must be absolutely impossible to pronounce while drunk. In fact, I suspect that it was named while drunk.

No, there are 2 Mohawks surviving (one restored recently) and a few others - a handful, all small locos. With the exception of the two 4-8-2's and the 999 Empire State 4-4-0, none of them are noteworthy, but still valuable.

I made it to Elkhart today.  As we pulled up, a NS was going by.  Very nice museum.   It was worth the stop.  Thanks to all, jeff

Yesterday we headed south and went to Marion Indiana.  Quilters amhalk of fame.  Birthplace of janes dean and the Garfield writer Davis.  Both individuals grew up in nearby Fairmount so we headed to their museum.  Dean is buried in the country cemetery just outside of town near the Indian motorcycle shop he bought his 1st bike at.  To make it train related, deans marx train set was at the museum.  Didn’t look like it had dad much use. A great trip

Probably too late for this trip, but for future reference...

There's a nice little steam train ride not too far away in Coldwater MI.  Also, the Tri State Station club in Fremont is open on Saturdays - well worth a visit if you're nearby.

And if you're into Flyer, the owner of the Marathon station on the north side of Angola has a layout room and display shelves in a room behind the store - you have to ask if he's around.  Worth a look if driving by, but don't go out of your way.
