I rediscovered these photos in an old file. A Google search brought up the official accident investigation report which I hadn't seen before:

http://www.atsb.gov.au/publica...air/ro-2010-015.aspx

The gist of the report is that a recently installed siding ("crossing loop") had rail misalignment exacerbated by high temperatures and insufficient ballast etc.

Some of the vehicles have eastern states license plates, possibly used cars being transported west to markets in Western Australia.

I wonder how far off the beaten path is this wreck?

The official report identifies the location ... you know where Kalgoorlie is, right?

What happened
At about 1603 (WST) on Tuesday 28 December 2010, freight train 1MP5 derailed on the Trans-Australian Railway Line at Goddards approximately 240 km east of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.

This is on the one transcontinental line, roughly 80% of the way across the continent.
